Since 2020, the Second River Bureau of the Water Resources Agency has been implementing the Executive Yuan's "Salute to the Ocean" policy. To ensure the continued cleanliness of seawalls and coastal waters and to raise public awareness of marine conservation, the bureau has coordinated efforts among private organizations, local businesses, and county and city governments along the Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli coasts. These efforts include promoting marine conservation, advocating for marine waste recycling, and organizing beach and river cleanups.
Today (26th), the Second River Bureau once again collaborated with the Hsinchu County Government, Xinfeng Township Office, Xinfeng Township Youth Volunteer Service Association, Xinfeng Township Fishery Culture Development Association, Xinfeng Village Environmental Volunteer Team, Puhe Village Environmental Volunteer Team, Xinguo Mission Committee of Xinpu Town, Xinfeng Township Xinguo Mission, Hukou Township Xinguo Mission, Hsinchu County Puan Charity Association, Yuanjen Volunteer Care Association, and Micron Taiwan. Together, nearly 350 volunteers gathered at the Hongmaogang seawall to conduct the "Environmental Beach Cleanup and Resource Recycling Promotion Event." This event was in response to the ICC (International Coastal Cleanup) initiative, aiming to assess the current state of key coastal areas in Hsinchu County and prevent marine debris and driftwood from accumulating on flood prevention structures, which could impact their ability to withstand tides. Through data analysis from ICC beach cleanup surveys, volunteers were educated about the composition and causes of local marine debris. This information will serve as a reference for coastal management agencies. Additionally, the event encouraged citizens to take concrete action to clean up marine waste, fostering greater awareness and concern for the marine environment, and promoting the daily practice of "source reduction and environmental plastic reduction."
Yang Jen-chieh, Director of the Second River Bureau, noted that the Xinfeng Township Coastal Recreation Corridor in Hsinchu County is now connected with the Green Corridor in Xinwu District, Taoyuan City. As such, the management of flood prevention roads, bicycle paths, and pedestrian walkways requires careful attention to prevent illegal waste from polluting the ocean. Due to the rise in extreme weather events, marine debris is influenced by monsoons, tides, and fishing activities, making it difficult to completely eliminate. Coastal authorities must not only focus on overall flood prevention and disaster reduction but also actively preserve the diversity and natural quality of the marine environment to improve its overall quality. The Second River Bureau continues to work with government departments and private organizations, pooling resources from both the public and private sectors to gradually reduce coastal waste year by year. The goal is to achieve the vision of "ecological rivers and sustainable coasts," creating a harmonious relationship between humans and water while ensuring a high-quality, sustainable coastline.
